Abstract

South Africa played a positive role on the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip. This role manifested in the form of a lawsuit filed with the international court of justice against Israel, accusing it of committing genocide against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. The lawsuit included a request for temporary measures to protect the lives of Palestinian civilians in the Strip.

The court issued its decision on January 26, 2024, including a set of temporary measures that met most of South Africa's demands. Although the international court of justice operates within a purely legal framework, issuing judgments and orders whose enforcement authority lies with the security council and the relevant states. The lawsuit itself and the court's decision hand an impact on Israel and a number of countries, reflecting positivity on the conflict from non-military perspectives.
